King Lear

A legendary classic
by William Shakespeare
adapted and directed by Amanda Rafuse

September 13 – November 2

As age overtakes Lear, he divides his kingdom amongst his daughters. Misjudging their loyalty, he finds himself stripped of all the trappings of state, wealth and power that had defined him. Now this once-revered king is trapped in an emotional hurricane ravaging his home, head, and heart.

King Lear is utterly epic in scope, soaring from the splendor of a royal palace to a meager hovel on a bare heath. On this journey, you will encounter folks from all walks of life: beggars, kings, and everyone in between. Written at the height of his game, Shakespeare delivers a work of remarkable beauty amidst its brutality, illuminating humanity’s capacity for both cruelty and compassion.

With a full ensemble of players and Producing Artistic Director Hal Cropp as Lear, the company ventures forth on this legendary classic for the first time in Commonweal history.

Perfect for fans of: Bernhardt/Hamlet, the dramas of Henrik Ibsen
