Piles of old Magazines
There’s a moment in No Wake where Peter and Sarah are looking through boxes of what some people call ‘junk’ at the cabin and they come across a box of Life Magazines. A bit of a confession: I love old things. I love junk. And odds and ends, but especially old papers and documents. Being married with kids might be the only thing that has saved me from a life walking through stacks of old pieces of paper. Ask my wife or look at my desk: my organizational system is piles.
But I love uncovering things. I love the smell of old books, the dusty quiet of antique shops, and the noisy jumble of rummage sales. So this scene where they look at Life Magazines piqued my interest. And I thought, what is my Life Magazine? The cover I was born with? My little slice of history?
So I only had one in my month. If you’re born earlier, Life Magazine came out weekly. But my month has only one and it was Joan Collins (she was a bad girl?). And a tidbit about Halley’s Comet. A little anti-climatic, but I would definitely get that cover and put it in a pile somewhere.

Hal Cropp, playing Peter, gets Italian Imports and then a headline Life at theEdge of the Sea – sounds romantic and a little applicable to No Wake.
Erica Berman, the playwright, gets Debra Winger, Sex and Violence in Samoa (woah) and Rabies! Yikes but there is a peripheral connection to the play.
Our intrepid director, Isa Leigh, gets The Power of Prayer. Much less splashy than those 80s covers.
Our youngest participants, stage manager Alexa Guitierrez and Amanda Byars, playing Sarah come around after Life Magazine had lapsed into their “A Year in Review” phase and both of the closest covers have 9/11 references. Weighty.
